This place has more buzz than bite. The atmosphere fits in well with Downtown Fort Collins identity: modern, hip, and relaxed. Besides being asthetically pleasing, there isnt much that is special about the food. I found my meal to be very bland, lacking the mexican flavor and spice that I craved, even with the hottest salsa they offer. The staff was just as bland as the food. Their hip clothes and piercings failed to hide the general lack of adequate customer service that should be expected in most food establishments. But I really liked how the music wasnt too loud; that was nice. Tl; dr: Refreshing atmosphere for chain burrito shop, but lacks the good flavor of its more popular competitors.

Great atmosphere, quick service and amazing selection of food and drinks. The roof deck patio is a must see as it over looks downtown. We always make this a quick lunch or dinner stop when downtown.

I must confess that not only had I not been to Illegal Pete's since, I think, 2010, I had absolutely no idea it was coming to Fort Collins. I can't explain my prolonged absence - the second I looked at their menu and saw that they not only had potato/veggie burritos, they also had fish burritos, I knew I had to come in. I can't speak to anything else on the menu, but let me tell you that my "Big Fish" with the veggie green chile was the truth. The burrito was comically large, the fish was hot and crisp, and it was stuffed to bursting with all sorts of delicious things. The salsa was pleasantly hot, the green chile was warm and flavorful, and I was left wondering why I hadn't been to a Pete's in almost 5 years. The staff at the bar was witty and ready with beer recommendations, the counter staff were friendly and put together quite a burrito. I still love Big City, but at least there's competition for delicious burritos in Fort Collins.

My friends and I tried Illegal Pete's the other night and we all agreed that we need to come back for more. The warm, fresh chips were delicious when paired with a variety of salsas, queso, and guacamole. My favorites were the mild salsa, the guac, and the queso, while my friends loved the cheesy, creamy queso and the green medium spice salsa. I think it was so good that we went through two baskets of chips, haha. I also tried a coin margarita with Dulce Vida tequila. I'm not usually a big tequila fan, but I thought Dulce Vida was good - when I tasted the Rocky Mountain one, I could taste the flavors that they mentioned. And it's great that's it's local and organic. For my dinner, I chose a big fish bowl with brown rice, mild salsa, black beans, and cheese - super tasty! Very fresh tasting, and the fish really was lightly battered and fried, not heavy at all. I think the prices are very fair, too. Dessert was sopapillas with powdered sugar and honey (omg yum) plus fresh out of the oven oatmeal raisin cookies. So stuffed! Had a great time, so glad I was able to try the food and see the space, and I'm definitely coming back. The roof is gorgeous (go check out the upstairs!!), and I can't wait to sit up there with a drink when it warms up :) Thanks Illegal Pete's!

Nice selection of beers on tap and a solid burrito. A nice spot with a cool roof top patio. Great bartender today. Buddies had an ok Bloody Mary. Maddie was awesome and friendly and helpful with beer suggestions and ideas around town.

Awful- just awful. Food has no taste and is always cold! Tried it a few times hoping it would get better because I think it has great atmosphere, but it never did.

  • Catie W.

Nothing special. The ingredients were not fresh and the food did not have very much flavor. Also, the bar is inconveniently located on the opposite side of the restaurant from where you order your food and you have to pay separately. I would honestly rather go to Qdoba or Chipotle.

  • Jesse M.

Previous review was a bit negative. Food is cheap and not bad. I didn't realize the space has a pretty rad convertible stage until FocoMX. And just to add my 2 cents on the matter, I lean slightly closer to illegal Pete's than la luz now.

My husband and I drove down from Cheyenne to try this place. The ordering process was easy, the food was delicious and there was plenty of clean tables. We will definitely come back to illegal petes in the future! A++++

Best fish tacos ever! We love going to Illegal Pete's for their fish tacos (and Big Fish Burrito). Also, we finally got breakfast burritos the other day and they were great too! We even had them cater for our wedding last month - it was perfect. They were so flexible with options and made sure everything worked out perfectly. The day of, we had no issues and everything was right on time and delicious. Our guests raved about the food and we couldn't be more happy with our choice of Illegal Pete's for our special day :)

I grew up in with "ill p's" near my house. Always a good go-to spot for me. I was a little disappointed to find the food just wasn't up to par... No taste, sloppy. Even the next to me mentioned he felt like he was eating a burrito with cardboard. None of the staff really seemed interested to change that when I mentioned my food was junk. Haven't been back...

Bland and tasteless house made cocktails. Had the Chauncey Margarita as part of the Fort Collins Passport Program. Don't think I'll be back for these drinks... Open air bar upstairs with one bar and a handful of large picnic tables seems pretty cool though. Good place for conversation. Didn't have the food, but smells great.

When given the option between Chipotle and Illegal Petes, I will ALWAYS choose Illegal Petes! I love the edgy vibe, the fun music, the full bar, the great staff, and the incredible food! Illegal petes does a good job with buying local/fresh ingredients. They dont charge extra for guac, and their queso is SO good! This location specifically is in a great location, with great management!

I recently visited Fort Collins and had a tremendous time at Illegal Pete's. The location was easy to find and I was pleased to find street parking right out front. The venue was massive and it had a fresh, clean, and welcoming feel. Also, the roof deck was gorgeous. The staff were just amazing and I liked that the General Manager was not only present but approachable. Each and every one of the staff I interacted with was warm and happy to engage in conversation - which I really appreciated. I was also happy to learn about where the food came from (Illegal Pete's supports local farmers! hooray!) and the establishments interaction/support of local musicians. I enjoyed trying all of the salsas as well as indulging in the fresh guacamole and mouthwatering queso with chips in anticipation of the main course, so much so that I nearly spoiled my appetite. My guest ordered the fish tacos which I was happy to try. The combination of fried fish within the taco was definitely an interesting one for me. I myself ordered the pork carnitas burrito on recommendation of the Illegal Pete's staff. The pork and sauce were super yummy, however I found the potato to be hard/undercooked. Dessert consisted of sopapillas and chocolate chip cookies. I had previously only had sopapillas at Casa Bonita so I was excited to learn that yes, I do indeed like sopapillas after all, Illegal Pete's sopapillas that is. I look forward to coming back to enjoy that beautiful roof top deck! Hopefully for some morning weekend Yoga.

Illegal Petes beats Chipotle hands down. Great food, great rooftop outdoor seating. You can always tell a great place when the lines are long... which move along swiftly! Seating is community and first come first serve but everyone is so friendly it doesn't matter.

Illegal Pete's is better than any other burrito place you've every heard of and all the ones you've never heard of and even the ones that don't exist yet.

This one is a mixed bag in a shiny foil wrapper. It has the atmosphere to make it successful in FoCo. Old meets new + lots of space for groups to gather. The food is where the ups and downs start. You are presented with a pretty typical mission burrito menu with the addition of "Colorado green chili" that can be added to anything. I should have known that if it was "Colorado" style, I shouldn't expect it to bite back. The green chili was pretty low on flavor, oily, and not spicy at all. Speaking of oily - that is how the chips, meats, and sauteed veggies were. Way too much oil to the point it affected consistency and mouth feel. Chips were bordering on the rubbery side due to the amount of grease they absorbed. Portions - rice and beans are pretty cheap to buy and prepare. So I was flabbergasted to see the line cook putting such skimpy scoops of rice on the burrito in front of me. One thing is for sure, you won't have any trouble single fisting this foil wrapped snack on your way out the door.

I attended the Yelp Elite Event on Monday and brought 2 Ft Collins guests and we really enjoyed the star treatment. The place is HUGE and would be great for a private party or corporate event. The GM was down to earth and friendly. I like that they support local music and buy all fresh food daily. First we had chips that were fresh & hot, guacamole was excellent and not too many onions, also liked the pico, queso and hot sauce. I had a house margarita and I was worried it would be too strong for me (I'm a cheap date) but it was just right. Later I had the Big Potato Burrito and no doubt, it was big. Friends had fish tacos and taquitos and both said they were good. Lastly we enjoyed sopapillas and fresh baked cookies. Nummy! Thanks for a great night!

I lived in denver for a long time and would eat at illegal petes regularly. When I found out one was coming to fort collins I couldn't be happier! Honestly I am very disappointed. The food doesn't taste the same at this one- something is off. I gave this location three chances and now I give up. I have thrown away all three of my burritos after eating about a fourth. Either too dry, soggy or they forgot something. I will forever love illegal petes in denver (even the boulder one rules). I have also always had TERRIBLE service at this location as well. Everyone looks like they hate their job. The portions are incredibly tiny at this one too. I ordered a children's burrito, and a big fish burrito and they were the EXACT same size. I will say that the atmosphere is amazing and great for fort collins. If you're wanting anything more than a beer and a cool place to just hang out, save yourself from this disappointing food and walk 2 blocks down to LA LUZ where you will get a much bigger tastier burrito for the same price.

Illegal Pete's... I love you. Tonight consisted of delicious creamy queso, fresh guac, and fresh hot chips. My dining companion and I both had burrito bowls... Mixed fresh veggies for me and marinated steak for my mom. The beef & pork is all natural from Niman Ranch, while the rest of the ingredients are locally sourced. Both of us thoroughly enjoyed our bowls smothered in green chili. For dessert, we had fresh & hot sopapillas with a drizzle of honey. Yuuuummy! As for drinks... If you want it, they got it. Plenty of local craft brews and a wide variety of top shelf liquor. We both had a coin marg with dulce vida organic tequila and it was beyond smooth. I'm not a big tequila drinker, but this drink was off the charts and will be my drink of choice the next time I'm in. If you want to try a LOCAL restaurant with local products, please check out Illegal Pete's. Oh, yeah... And don't forget to scope out the amazing roof top patio and occasional live music. That's where it's at.

Came here on a Tuesday night, and everything was so delicious. My friend ordered the nachos chicken, and I ordered the shredded beef quesadilla. The bartender was extremely laid back and very helpful in choosing A selection of beer. The restaurant is kind of set up like Chipotle in that you order from an assembly line and pay when you're done ordering. The food service was incredibly fast and everyone in the line was very helpful knowing that it was my first time there. The food was fresh fast and delicious, not much more I can say. I will definitely be bringing my family in when they come visit me in Colorado.

Only had a breakfast burrito from here so far, but it was excellent! Lots of flavor and fresh ingredients. Huge burrito too. Employees were very nice and atmosphere was cool too. Definitely will go back! Giving it 4 stars because it is a fast food type place (like chipotle), but it was very good!

Illegal Pete's is a place that I really missed after moving to Fort Collins so I was really happy to find out that we finally got one. It doesn't taste exactly like every other burrito joint and that's a GOOD thing. It's not a big conglomerate generic chain, it's a local Colorado chain. Taste-wise: it's absolutely delicious without needing to be super spicy. I tend to prefer mild-medium sauce with an emphasis on texture and flavor so it's perfect for me. If you are a hot-sauce snob who has shocked your taste buds into only enjoying very spicy Mexican food you might not get it. Perhaps you should go bathe in capsaicin......They use really tasty ingredients and mix them in the burrito before serving it to you. If burritos aren't your thing, order something else. The menu has a lot to offer. Nice bar too, pleasant atmosphere and that rooftop patio is going to be sweet as soon as the weather warms back up.

We came here excited for a new place in Fort Collins and it was horrible. It's a cool atmosphere and very clean and it looks to be quality food but the flavor was so non existent. I didn't even waste my time eating my tacos I just ended throwing them away as did everyone else with their meals. It had absolutely no taste. We even asked for some salt and hot sauce and it didn't even slightly help. I will never be back. It's not worth it.

My co-workers and I eat lunch here about once a week. Today I ordered the fish tacos. These are the best in Fort Collins!! To my amazement two of the three I ordered were over cooked and I couldn't eat them. I called the store and talked with Kyle. He went above and beyond what I thought was necessary to make up for the mistake. Needless to say I will be back and I'm super happy with the way the situation was handled! Good job Kyle and thank you Illegal Pete's for coming to Fort Collins!

Went there for dinner tonight with my husband and kids and it was absolutely amazing. We had burritos and tacos and cookies and chips with queso. The price was completely reasonable. They stomp all over Qdoba!!!!!

The first time I came here, it was right when they opened up their location and it was no good. I did go back to try again and it was much better. Today got their original bowl and it's good. Nothing to write home about but good. They get three stars for the whole family farm, no hormones and fun hippie/yuppie stuff like that. Also helping the 3 star rating was the iphone app, didn't have to wait in line which is nice, I suggest ordering that way.

Excellent queso! Even better green salsa--a cilantro lover's dream. Tried a fish taco and the shredded pork taco. Both were yummy, but probably will stick to pork taco. They have a good kids menu, and even made a little quesadilla for my toddler. Will definitely return.

I don't see what all the hype is about, besides a place with a great upstairs patio for the summer. The food was bland and cold. The service, awful. The drinks were terrible, how do you really screw up a drink? Unless you don't know what you are doing, that's what the feel for the whole place is, they just don't know what the are doing!!!

While visiting my daughter in Ft. Collins, I stopped into Illegal Pete's for a beer. Really liked the space - good use of an old building mixed with the openness of a new space. It was too cold for the rooftop balcony, however it will definitely be a place to come back to in the summer. The beer selection was full of local choices on tap and the bartender was very helpful in making my decision. My second visit was for food and I was not disappointed. Never really being a fan of Fish Taco's, I was talked into trying them. I will definitely be back. Everything tasted fresh and the people on the line were so helpful in building the perfect taco. Don't miss the queso!

As an individual with a wheat allergy, Spencer was extremely helpful and understanding. All of the ingredients were so fresh and delicious I want to eat there every day. I had a hearty chicken burrito bowl with guacamole and veggies and though it was extra, it was so worth it. Get the green AND red veggies! Delicious!

We've really tried to like this place, but after our second visit we give up. 1-star for customer service and bad food. The female counter staff with green-tipped hair...unhappy, non-plussed and unpleasant. Customers appear to annoy her just by being customers. If you hate your job, quit. And for the food....nasty. Sadly, Chipotle serves much better quality food. Ours has been undercooked and watery every time. The Matador along Harmony road is much, much better and has super friendly staff. Honestly, we want to like Illegal Petes, particularly since they stuck to their guns over the name battle. But we're never going back. Poor quality food and unhappy, unpleasant staff.

Consider yourself a ROOKIE if you fall for this place. With Mexican restaurants flooded in the Northern Colorado area, there are alot of great places to choose from. This is NOT one of them, La Luz right down the street is twice as good as illegal petes. The times I have been to illegal petes the food was ice cold, the taco shells crack and fall apart less than half way through eating the tacos. The meat might be room temperature at best but when they dump cold salsa and cold vegetables its game over. I really think this place is a hype trap. There are low end food trucks that are pumping out better quality and tastes then illegal petes. THE HYPE ISNT REAL!

If there is one thing Fort Collins is not lacking, it is Mexican restaurants. There are so many great options around here and Illegal Pete's has proved to be a major disappointment. The food has very little flavor and the staff seems like they would rather be anywhere else, but at work.

Been a fan of Illegal Pete's for many years, eating at the Denver and Boulder locations. So happy they've come to FoCo. A great option for an inexpensive meal with a great vibe in Old Town. Only disappointment... after talking them up to many friends they had a TERRIBLE (literally, labeled unacceptable) health board review a couple weeks back. Come on guys!

Really celiac friendly, great food, great employees, and an awesome environment. Eaten here multiple times and always get a great meal. Don't know what happened to anyone who had a bad meal here but they don't know good food when they are served it.

Tried this place again today and the food and experience was much better than our first visit. The chicken tacos were fresh and the restaurant was very clean. Both in the seating area and behind the serving line. We will be back. Thanks to the Business Manager for his professional reply.

I may have to give it another try but the first go around wasn't that pleasant. Our food wasn't bad. The taste was ok but the steak and pork were not real tender choice pieces of meat. Little chewy and tough. The people serving the food need to speak up. With loud music and lots of people talking it was hard to hear what they were asking. But the kicker was the bartender. Tried to get a beer to go with our meal but she was too busy visiting with the young men at the bar. Gave up before our food got cold. It's a glorified fast food joint and if you're lucky maybe you'll get a beer!

Don't waste your time or money. I'd rather go to Chipotle or Qdoba. Our visit to the new Fort Collins location left my family and I sadly disappointed. Illegal Pete's is very, very similar to Qdoba or Chipotle, but not as good. The staff was friendly but unable to keep up with the small line (9 ppl) of customers. It seems the process needs to be reviewed or the staff needs more practice. Once we got our food, everyone of the seven eaters at our table complained of mediocre, at best, food that was cold. It wasn't that it was not hot enough, it was COLD! Also, the fish tacos came with a piece of fried fish that was the size of my thumb, which is not enough for me to consider it worth the $ paid. They have no recycling either. Overall, we were sadly dissatisfied with the restaurant. I am hopeful that the bugs will be worked out and they will figure out how to be a decent restaurant in the future. Thanks!

Thanks!

Really celiac friendly, great food, great employees, and an awesome environment. Eaten here multiple times and always get a great meal. Don't know what happened to anyone who had a bad meal here but they don't know good food when they are served it.

If there is one thing Fort Collins is not lacking, it is Mexican restaurants. There are so many great options around here and Illegal Pete's has proved to be a major disappointment. The food has very little flavor and the staff seems like they would rather be anywhere else, but at work.

Easily the worst take out experience I've ever had. I really went overboard with sides of salsas, queso, guac, and every taquitos order had sour cream added to it through the app. I had arrived to pick up my order around 1:30pm on Super Bowl Sunday, informed the person at the register that I had a pick up time of 1:57pm and was wondering if it would be ready on time. He referred me to a man who I can only assume was the manager who then told me the order had just came in(even though i made the order 3 hours prior) and politely told me he would bring it over to me while I enjoyed a cold beer. Thinking everything was going accordingly to plan I agreed immediately. As the man came and served me a beer, I sat down and watched him chat with the two female bartenders for a good 10 minutes. I was hoping maybe others were busy preparing my $50 worth of taquitos I had pre-ordered through the app. Another 10-15 min pass, it's now time for my order to be ready, I think ok maybe it's going to be a couple more minutes, while i watch a steady stream of customers, as well as periods of no one in line at all. Employees as well as the manager specifically kind of socializing more than working. After about 20 minutes of waiting while staring at the employees wondering why they aren't doing anything, I walk up to the manager and ask if my order will be ready soon. He looks at me confused, then realizes I had 30 taquitos that were supposed to be ready 25 minutes ago, he says "oh shit" then proceeds to grab my ticket from under the register or somewhere, apologized, then informed me that it will be ready shortly! Are you kidding me? I wait while you converse and slack off? Unacceptable! When I did get my order, all 5 taquitos orders were there, the manager told me since it was so late getting ready, he had put "a bunch" of sides in a bag for us to enjoy. Which is complete bullshit because I ordered sides for every order! So we received one of each of guac and queso, when I had ordered 2, and no sour cream included, which I had ordered individually for each order! I feel like I got ripped off by $20! Like i said I had ordered online and included a $5 tip too, regret ordering this altogether, such a disrespectful experience. I grew up eating illegal petes when I was in high school in boulder(15 years ago). I have always been a loyal customer who loved the food your establishment produced. I have always been treated well, with respect, and in a timely manner. Now I don't know if I will return, and you can believe I will whole heartedly try to persuade anyone from visiting your Fort Collins location, or orders from the app.

  • Mike P.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
